| Vazhakoombu Cleaning TipsCleaning Vazhakoombu (Banana Flower)
Things You’ll Need:
✅ A sharp knife
✅ A bowl of water with a little turmeric or buttermilk (to prevent darkening)
✅ Cooking oil (to prevent stickiness on hands)
Step-by-Step Cleaning Method:
- Apply Oil on Hands – The banana flower releases a sticky sap, so rub a little oil on your hands before starting.
- Remove Outer Layers – Peel off the thick, dark purple petals (bracts) one by one. Under each layer, you’ll find small florets (buds).
- Separate the Florets – Collect the florets as you remove each layer. Stop peeling when you reach the tender, pale yellow inner part.
- Clean the Florets
- Take each floret and remove the stigma (long stiff stick-like part) and calyx (hard plastic-like cover at the base) since they don’t cook well.
- Drop the cleaned florets into the bowl of turmeric water to avoid discoloration.
- Chop the Tender Core – The innermost portion (pale and soft) can be finely chopped and used in cooking. Soak it in turmeric or buttermilk water.
- Drain & Cook – Once all florets and the core are cleaned, drain the water and use them in your recipe!
